Author's Note on First Blood
Luden Fall, great-nephew of the Duke of Fall in this story contemporaneous with events in Crown of Renewal, is not in the direct line of succession for any title. He did not expect to be sent out with a troop of cavalry as the representative of the family, off to the northwest to keep watch on the road along the foot of the Dwarfmounts. Everyone knows the invasion will come from the south, so he suspects he was sent away just to keep him safely away from battle. Only his older cousins will have a chance at glory. But war defies predictions, and so does Luden.
Publication note: "First Blood" was originally published in Shattered Shields, Baen Books, ed. Jennifer Brozek & Bryan Thomas Schmidt, 2014.
